Sonam Wangchuk has made several inventions to protect the environment and tackle the water crisis. The most prominent among these is the 'Ice Stupa' , which he designed in 2013. Through this technology, artificial glaciers of ice are created by freezing the flowing water of winter in the shape of a cone, which melts in the summer and meets the water shortage for agriculture in the arid areas of Ladakh.

For his social work, he was awarded the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2016 and the Governor's Medal in 2002. During 2024 , 2025he organized several mass protests and hunger strikes, including the Climate Fast, demanding statehood for Ladakh and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. However, his organizations have also faced legal and administrative challenges, including the cancellation of licenses by the central government for violating foreign funding regulations.
